Decemvirates of Aether

As Recorded By Galen Antonius, Historian of the Academy In The Year 3903

The Men and Women of the Deep have been an enigma to the collected people of Aether for all of Aether's collected history. It is not that they have shunned the other races, in fact far from it. Atlanteans have been a common enough sight at any coastal city or cove since for as long as anyone can remember...sailors upon the seas have known their aid whenever storms have dashed their vessels apart. They have proven to be a charitable and soft-spoken people whose tranquility and inoffensiveness are a joy to behold in this increasingly hostile world. Still, who among us can say that we truly know anything concrete about the Atlanteans? Precious little is known about the Sea People in their native environment. It is the society beneath the waves that presents the mystery. What follows is the collected knowledge of the Decemvirates, the 'Kingdoms' of the Atlanteans. To the best of our knowledge, there are ten of these Decemvirates. A Decemvirate is more than a mere socio-political entity...it is an entire society within a society. Each one is unique and is different than the other.

There are ten Decemvirates in Aether, each within one of four sections of the world's oceans and seas. Not all are open to PC backgrounds so please do not create a history including those that are closed to the game.

Decemvirates open to characters: Amaris, Orman, and Pandion.

Decemvirates closed to characters: Lir, Ipponis, Orcinus, Organil, Phorcys, Salacia, and Triton.

The Atlantic Decemvirates

The Atlantic Decemvirates are the oldest and grandest of the Decemvirates. The Amaris are known for their Trade Fleet, the largest and swiftest of any of the Decemvirates. The Tritons were once considered the center of the Atlantean world, many, many generations ago. However with the growth of Atlantis, the power has shifted, leaving this eastern Atlantic Decemvirate to their own devices. The Atlantean Decemvirates are known to be on good terms with the Mediterranean, especially between the Amaris and the Ormani. The Tritons have not become isolationists like the Salacians or Phorcys, but with attitudes are slightly loftier and arrogant and have become more comfortable to remain in their own waters.

* Amaris Decemvirate - Southern Atlantic
Triton Decemvirate - Northern Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico

The Northern Decemvirates

The Northern Decemvirates are a study in contrasts; One of them is a known quality, and the other is not. Still, an air of mystery surrounds the Decemvirates of the Lir and Salacia. In general, the Atlanteans of this region tend to be hardier and more close-mouthed than the Atlantic Decemvirates. The Atlanteans of this region also tend to be much more conservative than almost any other region. They are not given to conversing much with outsiders and it is rare that Land-Dwellers will interact with them. In many ways, I would imagine that the Atlanteans of the North resemble closely in nature and demeanor to the Atlanteans when they first arrived beneath the waves.

Lir Decemvirate - North Sea, Irish Sea, and Baltic Sea
Salacia Decemvirate - Great Lakes and Arctic Ocean

The Mediterranean Decemvirates

The Mediterranean Decemvirates are an interesting study in contrasts. On one hand there is the Orman Decemvirate, the home of the fabled Atlantis and on the other is Phorcys, now a minor Decemvirate that was almost destroyed by the wrath of the Varati God-King, Khalid Atar. While Orman flourishes as the center of the Atlantean world, the Phorcys have become complete isolationists and remain in their own seas. Because of the location of Atlantis, this region is a hotbed for political power and has drawn colonists from other Decemvirates to this area so all might have some pull in Atlantis.

Phorcys Decemvirate - Black Sea
* Orman Decemvirate - Mediterranean Sea

The Pacific Decemvirates

The end of the 'Imperial' age saw a great deal of restructuring amongst the Atlantean people. The Atlantic, Northern, and Mediterranean Decemvirates retreated beneath the waves and their society began to transform itself into it's present form. However, their were those amongst the Atlanteans whom did not wish to settle for gentility just yet. They did not wish to war or get involved with the Land-Dwellers, the trauma of the recent war was much too great. However, those Atlanteans wanted to live in a wilder place away from the established society of Atlantis. Thus, the Third Great Migration occurred...led by primarily by the Amarisians and later the other Decemvirates. Many of the brightest and most intrepid of the Atlanteans sailed or swam to the wilder waters of the Great Ocean. The oldest of the Pacific Decemvirates is only nine hundred years old and their is a 'frontier' feeling amongst the waves of the Great Ocean. Every year uncovers greater mysteries.

Ipponis Decemvirate - South Pacific and Australian Coastlines
Orcinus Decemvirate - Pacific Rim and Sea of Japan
Organil Decemvirate - Pacific Ocean and Hawaiian Islands
* Pandion Decemvirate - Indian Ocean and Indonesian Islands
