Foreign Races - Raven's Cove

Raven's Cove is a small town that grew from a mongrel settlement on a large island they simply refer to as Freeman's Isle. The small town was settled roughly one hundred and fifty years ago by a ship of slaves who were able to take control of the ship they were on and turned it away from the Empyrean lands they were destined for and found the yet-undiscovered cove. The mutiny was led by a large mongrel nicknamed Raven. Those who liked the man claimed he was named such for his dark coloring, sleek black hair and large hooked nose, but those who spoke ill of him claim he was sold after raping an Empyrean woman and promising he'd give her darkling children. An arrogant sort, Raven was also rather well-educated for a slave and deemed the fledgling town be named for him, as he found it and made sure the mongrels who carved out a life there knew how to survive.

The small settlement grew and soon more escaped slaves learned of it and sought to make a new life for themselves on the isle. The town soon accepted any outcast who was searching to live a life of true freedom. As Raven's Cove grew, it strayed from simply being a slave's refuge and it developed into a thriving trading center along the coast. The residents of the town began to make their living off of vessels that passed by and out into regions unknown and for many, Raven's Cove became the last familiar port where one could acquire necessary supplies and do a bit of trading.

But the settlement was popular not only with honest traders and explorers, but with pirates as well. The city helped fill the ranks of some local pirate vessels and those former residents found places in the region for the pirates to stash their goods until such a time as was safe to retrieve them. Even to this day the residents of Raven's Cove deal with pirates as much as with honest men, though the residents of the town generally keep such information to themselves. There are rumors, of course, that the town is friendly to pirates, but solid evidence to the fact is few and far between. This is generally attributed to the fact that most outsiders are only interested in a brief stopover on to other ports, an ale or two and a woman to warm one's bed. Rarely is the town investigated, simply because it is out of the way and the residents have been known to drive off those who become too curious for their own good.

Raven's Cove has no real form of government, but is run by descendants of that first ship, including Raven himself. They govern in a similar fashion to a city council with positions passed down from father to son, mother to daughter. The council hears grievances from the townspeople, collects the town's taxes (though most come in the form of taxing the services provided to outsiders), and seeing that their ordinances are carried out and obeyed. It is by no means a perfect system, but it works for the residents of the town as much as any governmental system can in a town as rough an unpredictable as Raven's Cove.

Today, Raven's Cove is known for it's strong ale, the 'maids' (who are anything but, but a lonely sailor cannot be picky) at the Mischievous Mermaid, and the various shops along the square known to be able to procure almost any item imaginable. It is generally a friendly town, welcoming all travelers with open arms, though such hospitality does not come cheap. Slavers attempting to come into the town and carry away easy prey have found themselves misjudging the strength of the town and their determination to work together for their own protection. The town has expanded inland a fair ways as agriculturally-minded arrivals have made Raven's Cove their home.
