Non-Player Characters or NPCs can be described in three ways. One: They are the game's extras or background characters, ones that have no actual player controlling them on a regular basis, but they exist within the game in some form. Two: They can be a character that is attached to a PC in some fashion and are controlled through that PC. And example of this might be a character's servant. Three: A temporary character that is played as a PC for a limited period of time. An example of this kind of NPC is a member of one of the races the ships will meet up with in the game.
Listed below are some of the NPCs in the game. Some of them are 'open' NPCs, meaning anyone may ask to play that character for a short period of time to get a feel for the game. Others are closed NPCs, meaning they are a character controlled/created by another PC. If you would like to play one of the open NPCs, please see the Playable NPCs page for more information.
Character Name: Aren Lothgarsen
Casting Call: Hugh Jackman
Position: Powerful Jarl and Clairvoyant
Race: Aesir
Availability: Not available, Temp Aesir NPC
Character Bio: Considering himself the messiah of the Aesir, Aren had the unfortunate luck of being born as the second son of a powerful Jarl and the daughter of an influential godar. A brilliant politician as well as a skilled warrior, however, he has consolidated many lands of the Aesir under his authority through wealth, persuasion, fear, and brute force, skillfully exploiting his gift of Clairvoyance. Convinced by his dreams and visions that a conflict with the Najada is inevitable and the Aesir stand between extinction and prosperity, he has sought to unify the Aesir under his banner and establish a new 'Empyre' of the north. Despite his large land holdings, economic influence, and political weight amongst the Aesir, such an ambitious goal is incomplete at best, with very strong opposition from his fellow Jarls and chieftains.
Character Name: Francis Burke (aka Mister Burke)
Casting Call: Roger Livesey
Position: First Mate of the Amarada
Race: Mongrel
Availability: Not available, NPC controlled by Sebastian.
Character Bio: Bio coming soon
Character Name: Captain Caerlyn Neath
Casting Call: Debra Messing
Position: Captain of the pirate ship The Defiant
Race: Mongrel
Availability: Not available, Temporary NPC
Character Bio: Bio coming soon
Character Name: Ingvar Sorensen
Casting Call: Sean Bean
Position: Aesir Warrior
Race: Aesir
Availability: Not available, Temporary Aesir NPC
Character Bio: Ingvar lives and breathes every stereotype ever developed about the Aesir and their warriors. A good death is as envied as a good life, and a day is not complete if there has not been some raiding done, some blood spilled, a woman or two in the bed and a mug of ale before the fire. A large man with a booming voice, he is a skilled and fearsome warrior. He's marked with scars and has even lost an eye, but laughs when asked about it and says the other man fought well and deserved the prize he won. He is rough and brutish and always in the mood for food, ale and a good song, especially when the song is about him.
Character Name: Maura
Casting Call: Jennifer Saunders
Position: Owner of Trinkets and Treasures
Race: Mongrel
Availability: Temporary NPC for Raven's Cove, not available.
Character Bio: Maura is the owner of the ever-popular Trinkets and Treasures, a store in the mongrel town of Raven's Cove. As fearless as any man, Maura isn't
afraid to speak her mind, though she's never really overly malicious. No
one could ever call her a lady and she likes it that way. She's known
for a couple things, her rather ample assets and her very unladylike
habit of spitting. She claims she's an honest businesswoman and wouldn't
have it any other way.
Character Name: Rat (aka Judah)
Casting Call: John Leguizamo
Position: Sailor on the Makara
Race: Mongrel
Availability: Available for play
Character Bio: He doesn't remember the name his mother gave him, hates the name his master forced on him and has come to accept the name his shipmates have bestowed on him. He is simply known as Rat. Once a slave to a Varati master, he escaped that cruel fate and made for the vara's docks, hoping to stow away on a ship a friend and former slave has managed to find berth on. But Tyche had other plans and Judah found two ships in the harbor matching his friend's description and he chose the wrong ship. The captain was a generous sort and allowed the young mongrel a place as a ship's boy. Soon he became a sailor, a quick and nimble young man that could scurry up the rigging and fit into the tightest spots in the hold, a talent which earned him the name of Rat. A cheerful sort, for the most part; the sea is his home and each port a chance for adventure. He is known for two oddities; the Varati brand on his arm and his fear of fire.
Character Name: Ruach
Casting Call: Bill Murray
Position: Crazy ole sea captain
Race: Mongrel
Availability: Temporary NPC for Raven's Cove, not available.
Character Bio: Every tavern has that crazy old man who seems to sit by the fire all day and tell wild and unbelievable stories to the locals and visitors alike.
For the Mermaid in Raven's Cove, that man is Ruarc, a mongrel who has
lived his life on the sea, and still sails from time to time, when he's
not drinking his share of ale or attempting to flirt with the local
'maids'. Born and bred in Raven's Cove, he claims he descended from
Raven himself, but everyone knows that's a lot of nonsense. He's a
friendly type who will talk your ear off if you let him, spinning yarns
more outrageous than the last, but that doesn't mean all his tales are
pure fiction. The man's been on the sea all his life, he knows. A shame
his mind seems to be going.
Character Name: Solveig
Casting Call: Miranda Otto
Position: Housewife and Craftswoman
Race: Aesir
Availability: Not available, Temporary Aesir NPC
Character Bio: Considered a runt through most of her early years, Solveig was discouraged from becoming a warrior. Instead, she was encouraged to try her hand at weaving, spinning, sewing and other homebound chores and this is where she began to shine. No longer desiring a life as a warrior, she has become well-known in the town if Idavoll for her beautiful weavings and embroidery. She has a warrior husband who spends more time raiding than at home, but has returned enough to get her with child four times, all boys. She has always been quite curious of the world outside the walls of Idavoll which is not surprising since she's never left it.
Character Name: Valdis
Casting Call: Claudia Black
Position: Aesir Warrior
Race: Aesir
Availability: Not available, Temporary Aesir NPC
Character Bio: Due to her coloring, her gender is of little
consequence to the men she fights side by side with. She is not only
their warrior woman, but their talisman of fortune and glory. Touched
and blessed by Othin, she has brought them success and wealth, always
proving to be not only highly capable as a fighter, but with the knack
of bringing them good luck as well. But still in many ways she is a
woman in a man's world and certain practices of her kin are difficult
for her to accept in the name of warfare and battle, such as the raping
that often happens in the heat of an attack. In turn she is more
reserved than many of her warrior kin, though hot-blooded enough when it
comes to bedding a man that strikes her fancy. But she will not marry
nor take any man into her bed who thinks he might be the man to bind or
break her. She is determined to live free and independent, beholden to
no man.
