Aether is an original-themed fantasy MUSH (Multi-User Shared Hallucination) -- a type of online roleplaying game. It was based on various world mythologies, including classical Greek and Roman, Native American, and ancient Persian and Indian. With its consent-based roleplay, extensive news files, and innovative code, Aether has attracted a multitude of talented players and staff. Originally open from January 23, 1998, to February 14, 2002, Aether has officially returned with a revised theme.
Known now as AetherII, its doors officially opened on May 14, 2004. Welcome back!

Nearly every culture has some stories of angels, demons, faeries, gods and goddesses. Was it merely human fancy that created similar legends all across the world, or could those stories have some basis in fact? What if these beings really did exist, and our rare glimpses of such creatures gave rise to tales, myths--even entire religions.
Imagine, if you will, a world that is a reflection of our own. Seen as if through rippled glass, or the ever-changing depths of the ocean, it seems at once familiar and strange. Aether is this world, a distorted image of what is, what has been, and what will be. It is the heart and soul of the 'real' world, and its magical facets are reflected in our 'reality.' Aether is a world separate from our own, yet inexplicably entwined; where "gods" and "goddesses" still walk; where "angels" and "demons" wage a battle between light and darkness; and where magic, in all its varying forms, still exists.

The Staff at Aether have given a great deal of time in order to combat the malaise that seems to have infected Aether of late, and while we do appreciate those who have stuck with the game and maintained their activity, we have reached the conclusion that it is time for the game to switch gears. The playerbase is no longer capable of supporting a grid the size of these two cities and surrounding forest based on the fact that we often have less than ten characters logged on a night. So, we are going to take Aether into a new direction; a direction that was hinted at way back in Aether I. In the first game, we were introduced to new cultures, including the Aesir and the Najada, among others. We have chosen to expand a bit on the Discovery aspect of the game. Because of the small playerbase, we will be narrowing the game down to two exploratory ships which will sail the seas of the world and learn about new peoples and revisit some familiar ones. Some of you are probably asking, 'How does my character fit into this?' Well, that is the question we, as the Staff are going to present right back to you. We are inviting all players who would like to help in this endeavor and keep the world of Aether alive to create or bring along their characters for this venture. There are, however, some rules that we are going to have to enforce: - All characters must remain in Theme. That one, I think is a given - All characters must have a reason to be on the ships. There are no passengers. Everyone must have a necessary duty. - All characters are going to be required to maintain at least 2 hours of PUBLIC RP a week. This can be within a plot, this can be spread across three days, this can be RPing social events. - All players will be expected to contribute TP/event ideas and see them run. One person will not be responsible for running all events. The character process is going to work a couple of ways: If you would like your current character to be on the ship, we will need a blurb as to why they leave the cities and what job they see themselves doing on the voyage. Remember, everyone must have one, even if they're Sailor #5. If you would like to create a new character for this, then you will need to send us a little, mini-app which would detail a bit about the character you want, his/her background, and...of course, what he/she does on the ship and how they joined up. The points from Chargen will remain and if you want more, or if you want a Special character (Halfbreed, Two magics, Empyrean with magic, Darkling) you will need to send us a full application. There will be a limited amount of slots for these characters still. There will be another option for characters as well. We will have a small pool of Pre-Gen characters which are mostly meant for those who cannot commit to the 2 hours a week RP requirement or those who just want to try this new setting, or even those who may want to try out the game for the first time. These Pre-Gens will be passworded and the password will be given to those who have sent us mail requesting said Pre-Gen. There will be more detail on these NPCs as we re-build. Chargen will be closed immediately, no new alts will be allowed to be created. Players that want to continue RPing through the next month will be allowed to do so, but staff will not be running any plots. We will be taking a month to transition to the new setting, and after that month will will be rearranging the Grid and resetting locks for IC entrances. Those characters who have not transferred to the ships will be set in the OOC room as the current Grid will no longer exist for IC Roleplay. We hope to see everyone as crew on one of the ships but if not, we would like to thank you all for helping to bring this game back to life. We are hoping that this paring down of setting will help the game to grow once more. Discussion about the new direction and updates about the game's progress will all be done on a temporary EZBoard rather than here on the game. This will also include further information on character creation, character types needed and any other policies that are brought up. Feel free to visit and ask questions, offer suggestions or just keep yourself updated as to what is going on. Staff will be around throughout the next month as we work on building and re-structuring if you have any questions of us. If you have a question that we think is useful for everyone to hear the answer to, we will post the question and response on the EZBoard where it can be added to the discussion.
