"Hearts of Fire"

by Niamh

By the grace of Khalid Atar, this tale shall be told:

Ashur Masad was. From the very beginning, He was there, guiding the light of the stars to shine in the evening, the light of the sun by day. But there was nothing for it to shine upon. So He created the world.

Now the sun, His light, could shine on seas, on mountains, on grasses and trees, on deserts. But He soon grew bored. So the beasts of the world were created. But the beasts would not worship Him. Growing frustrated, He turned to his wife, Ushas, who suggested He create a people meant to worship him. And so He did.

The first people he created, he gave the heart of a fish. These people were lithe and colorful, making their home in the water. But, like their brothers, the fish, they were fickle and refused to worship Ashur Masad. So they were cast from his favor, left to the seas.

To the next people he gave the strong, loyal heart of a wolf. But it soon became evident that these people preferred to hear only the calls of the forests, of the Hunt, and not the calls of their creator. So they were also cast in disfavor and left to the trees and beasts of the forests.

His frustration growing, Ashur Masad then tried creating a third people, giving them the proud heart of the eagle. These people seemed the most likely to worship him, but their pride soon convinced them that they were better than the others. That and the fact they were given Eagle's wings and could fly above the earth, they considered all beneath them, including Ashur Masad and his Wife. These people were quickly cast out of His favor, and they began to resent Him.

Ready to admit defeat, Ashur Masad looked at the world that he had populated, disappointed that none would worship him. But He would give it one last try.

These next people He sculpted out of stone. When it became time to give them a heart, He was at a loss. But His wife, Ushas, suggested that He give them some of His own heart of fire. This He did, and was rewarded as the Man he created recognized Ashur Masad as his deity and bowed down to worship him.

Pleased, Ashur Masad created more men of His heart. Not to be outdone, Ushas quietly created Her own people, of the same stone. She even stole a bit of Her own husband's heart to lend to them... Her women. They recognized Ashur Masad as being their god, but they also saw Ushas as another deity to be worshipped. But She warned them that their worshipping of Her should be done in secret... lest Her husband find out, for He would get jealous. In exchange for that, She would teach them certain secrets.

Ashur Masad did not notice, for he was too busy teaching his people the ways they should live. He taught them the secrets of the light and of fire in exchange for worshipping Him, and His people readily agreed, eager to learn.

And that is how the Varati were created.
