"Zintkatogleglega (The Jay)"As sometimes happens, the collected black disrespect of Grandmother among the spoils of some men grew into a horrid spirit. Called "Sour Shadow," the spirit moved slowly, but it moved so quietly, none could sense or see it coming. And when it came, it ate everything. No creature or plant in its path seemed able to stand a chance. Somehow, a Jay, Zintkatogleglega, escaped, and flew to the Sky Father, looking for aid. "Please make a rainstorm, and wash the Sour Shadow away!" The Jay pleaded. The Sky Father did, to no avail. "Please make a giant thunderclap, and scare the Sour Shadow away!" The Sky Father did so, again, the Shadow crept on. "Please make a thick snowstorm, and freeze the Sour Shadow in its tracks!" The Sky Father did so, but for the third time, nothing happened. The Jay was in a frustrated panic. He fluttered back down to the Shadow, squawking loudly as jays do. Annoyed, the Shadow devoured him whole. Still alive within the spirit, the Jay continued to squawk loudly. The birds heard his warning and fled. The Sylvans heard his cry and ran. The beasts ran, the fish swam, the plants pulled up their root and fled as well. The Jay was digested, but with nothing more to eat, the Shadow quickly starved todeath. The Sky Father, as well as all other creatures, had much to owe to the Jay. In respect, his image was fitted into the Heavens, to stay with the Sky Father for all time. FIN
