"The Ettowealona Council"

Date: June 22, 1999
Place: Sachem's Chamber - Great Oak - Forest
Cast: HeartsEase, Koralland, Many Shadows, ShadowWatcher, Sharpclaw, Silentshadow, SilverFox, Skyfire, Star-Seeker, Tiata
Emits: Crooked-Shank, Fleeting Doe, Voice Like Thunder, Yellow Flower
Scene: The Ettowealona hold a meeting to discuss the latest news of the tribe, to make note of new members and visitors (as well as those whose visitation rights have been revoked), and to listen to an Atlantean ambassador representing the Amarisian Decemvirate.

------

Early morning sun is obscured by the cold rain drizzling down from the gray sky. The pattering sound of droplets on the thick, leafy canopy and the irregular, deeper sound of water running along low areas and splattering from branches to rocks deadens noise in the forest. Blended in with this are voices in the dry, communal area of the shelter of the Great Oak. Children snatch fruit from baskets or small bits of meat off the spits over the fire. Mothers ignore mud-encrusted children who whoop as they scoot down the glen slope on a natural slide.

Many Shadows comes out of the arching root that frames the entry to the cave that forms the council chambers and her home. She looks from one to the other and simply invites. "All who have business or interest, come inside beside the warming fire and we will start."

SilverFox stands, pushing himself up from the log. He extends a hand to HeartsEase to help her up.

HeartsEase hesitates for a moment before accepting the hand, and nods, smiling gratefully as she rises.

Many Shadows reaches out one hand to pull the draped leather back and leave it aside for fresh air and as a signal that all may freely enter the Ettowealona Council. The session is not closed. She nods to Voice Like Thunder and Yellow Flower, indicating for them to guide the strangers inside and then lifts her hand to chest level and extends her arm to indicate for them to return to post at the boundaries of the land once showing the way.

Tiata reaches up to scratch her head, and as an afterthought, takes off her cap, revealing a mass of stringy black hair and her pointy ears. Shuffling from foot to foot, now nervous as she eyes the small gathering, she looks to the guards for what she should do next. Relief floods her facial features as she hears the invitation, and she steps forward.

Skyfire stands as well, murmuring a few words to his escort. The grey-clad Delphite smiles and nods, sitting back down on one of the logs outside, allowing Skyfire to enter alone.

SilverFox bites his lip, and a sad looks crosses his appearance for a moment. He places his hand on HeartsEase shoulder and whispers in her ear.

Many Shadows lifts the flap and goes into the Sachem's Chamber.

Looking over to see the warmer fire, ShadowWatcher lifts himself to stand again and makes his way toward it.

Skyfire, Tiata, ShadowWatcher, HeartsEase, and SilverFox enter the Sachem's chamber.

Sachem's Chamber - Great Oak - Forest:
A huge root frames the entry of a cave nestled at the base of the Great Oak in the Sylvan glen. Ornately tooled oiled leather anchors down to cover the doorway or pulls aside to view the glen. The interior of the cave is roomy and consists of shaped rock walls and floor with roots intertwined to form intricate patterns on the ceiling. Scattered stacks of furs provide places for sitting or sleeping. The center of the room contains a recessed firepit that provides both light and heat safely with stones absorbing and radiating the heat. Niches in the walls display a variety of objects, from a simple bedraggled dry flower and fumbling braided leather strips to valuable gold and gems and the rarest of crafts. All seem to he held in equal places of honor. Space in the large room is arranged into personal and sleeping areas, and regions that are used by the council of elders in dealing with the business of the tribe.

SilverFox sits with the Council of Elders.

HeartsEase looks at SilverFox in surprise at what he says before going to join the council of elders. She takes a seat in the back of the chamber, out of the way.

Many Shadows ties back the leather so light and air can enter, cool moisture freshening the air in a swirl that briefly forms a mist as it passes over the glowing embers in the firepit. "Come, welcome. Today is not so much business as is usual among us."

Silentshadow lifts the flap and comes in from the glen.

SilverFox looks upon the group gathered, then to Sachem. He packs his pipe and asks a boy for a lit twig to set fire to the tobacco.

Silentshadow creeps in silently, hoping she didn't interrupt.

Skyfire takes a seat towards the back as well, his eyes full of wistfulness, but also contentment.

Many Shadows paces the floor as if too impatient to sit for the time being, yet is controlled, and by no means anxious or angry, simply full of energy. "First we will clear up old items of interest so all can make note of what is occurring and keep up with tribal news. First is the visitor status. Have any visitors they wish to request rights for, and any who have lost their visitor rights?"

Removing his cloak, ShadowWatcher crouches down closer to the fire.

HeartsEase motions to Silentshadow to join her in the back.

Tiata watches Many Shadows closely from her place near the doorway. Staring it would seem. But to Tiata, the stare is not meant to be rude, it's just that she's not sure what to do and well, she's sort of at a lost.

Silentshadow nods, moving back towards her mother.

Many Shadows says "Welcome back, ShadowWatcher. I hope you will listen and carry word, you and HeartsEase, to any members who can not attend." She gestures to the visitor to be seated if she wishes.

Koralland lifts the flap and comes in from the glen.

SilverFox takes a drag on his pipe, and a circle of smoke comes from the bowl, floating and expanding upwards. He nods to ShadowWatcher as Many Shadows points him out.

HeartsEase nods to the Sachem from her place in the back of the chamber, where her daughter, Silentshadow, has just joined her.

A baby in a mother's arms begins to cry. Attempts to bring the baby to peace are failing, so the mother excuses herself and leaves the room.

Skyfire's eyes dart about to look at those gathered, finally focusing on the circle of smoke about SilverFox's head.

"Chookma, Sachem." ShadowWatcher looks up from the fire to nod at Many Shadows. "It will be done." Moving back away from the fire, he finds a place to sit and begins rummaging through his satchel.

Many Shadows bends over the fire and places the point of a twig against one of the glowing coals until it begins to blaze, then carries it to light a small, crude candle in a bowl with a filigree pattern and another made of oil in a small bowl with a floating wick. These illuminate the cavern fully when coupled with the pallid light from the rain-laden sky.

SilverFox clears his throat, "Sachem, there is a visitor with the name of Tremor. He has shown up just today, escorted in by the guards. It was his intention to speak with you about perhaps gaining tribe-membership. He hails from River Recluse, a place I visited in my travels. With the sadness of a loss in the family, he looks for happier times." He glances around the room, "He is not here at the moment, perhaps misplaced himself in our woods, but he would like temporary guest status as he evaluates our tribe."

The click-click-click of a walking stick against hard surface rises through the room as Crooked-Shank makes his way to the Council of Elders table. He offers only a nod to Many Shadows, and sits down quietly.

Many Shadows says "If there are no objections, that is a reasonable request. So granted. Please let others know his status so they do not, in error, drive him away. One visitor, Voe, has lost visitation rights. She is not to come on our lands or our jointly-owned lands. This she did for lack or respect, for interfering with our tribal negotiations, for rudeness and disrespect and outright insulting those who sought business with us."

Koralland enters the chamber, and his eyes scan the Sylvans calmly. He seems a bit nervous at being here, not as much as he was at riding the horse that brought him here though. He moves quietly to the back of the chamber, hoping to avoid disturbance of the matters conducted.

Tiata wrings her cap between nervous hands and listens intently.

Many Shadows says "She additionally earned this for trying to ignore our warriors and our tribal boundaries by bringing a Varati onto our lands. I sent them to grounds not claimed by any or to the woods north of the city before they find Apisachi lands. There is a border there."

Both Crooked-Shank and SilverFox nod to Sachem, and turn their attention back to the group. SilverFox asks, "Are there any other visitors, those who wish to be guests, or those who seek tribal membership?"

Tiata raises her hand slightly, "I... I think I need ta be a guest or a visitor..." she ducks her head, finishing in a mumble, "or somethin'."

HeartsEase frowns as she listens and nods. She had heard about Voe's doings somewhat before. It is good that she has lost rights. Her eye catches someone new, and her breath catches in her throat. Atlantean?! The old fear rises within her, and her hands ball into fists in her lap. She tears her gaze away from the Atlantean with difficulty.

Through the leather pulled aside to leave the chamber open to all who have business with the Ettowealona tribe may be seen some small bit of traffic: persons entering and leaving as their business is concluded. A warrior gently guides strangers to places of respect amid soft furs to await their turn. Clusters of interested tribe-members sit watching, and Elders are in their circle, not as many as a full meeting, but enough for the business being discussed.

Many Shadows addresses the stranger. "Tell us of you and your purpose here. Who are you?" comes the polite wording to the girl. Eyes rest their gaze on the Atlantean and one finger raises in a subtle sign that he is next on the agenda after this one.

Silentshadow sees her mother's reaction and, remembering why, puts a comforting hand on HeartsEase's shoulder.

Skyfire shifts slightly. He'd like to speak up... like to be considered a guest, or better yet, a member of the tribe. But he can't. Not now. Perhaps not ever. So he merely watches as others are granted rights... or have them revoked.

Scratching at a sheaf of paper with a hardened stick of charcoal, ShadowWatcher is otherwise quiet while making notes to himself as others are speaking.

The pipe brought to SilverFox' lips glows red as he inhales another lung-full of tobacco smoke and offers his undivided attention to Tiata.

Tiata glances around the room and steps forward. "My... uh.. name is Tiata. And I... uh, well... I'm 'ere ta find my past." Well, that came out dandy and a blush slides up her neck and over her wind-worn cheeks. To try and compensate, she blurts out, "I was taken from my folks when just child and it's taken thirty years ta find me way back 'ere. So 'ere I am, hopin' ya fine folks can 'elp me?" She takes a deep breath and waits for any reactions, eyes wide with hope.

SilverFox calls a young teen-age girl over to him. Fleeting Doe approaches and SilverFox whispers something to her. She glances to Tiata, then back to SilverFox and bows slightly before she rushes out of the room on an errand.

SilverFox leans over to Many Shadows and whispers to her.

Many Shadows nods. "Then granted. You may visit as long as you treat us with honor and respect -- as long as you respect and live by our ways while among us. You take nothing that is not needed, do not waste, and return to the earth what is taken from it on passing. Those are our ways of worshipping Nokomis, or 'Earth Mother,' or 'Grandmother,' as some call her. We also honor Onatha at harvest and planting-time, Ferrin the trickster and deity of the shifters, and others of our gods, Tupuran, Sky-father. This tribe is only about five years old now, newly-formed with the purpose of redeeming those Sylvans lost to our ways, or outcast, and to offer them a last chance to live tribal and Sylvan life, to have their children learn our ways and to be accepted with full respect among any tribe."

Whispering, "Spirit-Walker or Turning-Leaf might..." mostly to himself, ShadowWatcher writes Tiata's name in his notes.

HeartsEase accepts her daughter's gesture of comfort gratefully, placing her own hand upon Silentshadow's and squeezing it. Her gaze remains averted, but her senses are alert to the presence of the Atlantean.

In a hasty return, Fleeting Doe comes back into the room. She carries a small stack of folded garments, which she happily offers to Tiata.

Many Shadows says "One named Cloud, an elder and clairvoyant, or Turning Leaf, of the Apisachi Tribe who visits here, may be of help to you. Spirit-Walker, I fear, has gone to fulfill her name, now walking with the spirits. Her camp was deserted and showed no signs of life, nor any signals she usually leaves to indicate she was away for a visit or retreat. She was sickly and frail, and I fear for the worst for her."

The Atlantean remains quiet until addressed and recognized. Koralland is out of his water here, Sylvan customs are not something he has studied, but he needs to be here.

Tiata's eyes light up as she's invited to be a guest, but her shoulders droop in response to being told that this is a newer tribe. Eyes darting to ShadowWatcher briefly, she turns her attention to Many Shadows, nodding. "I appreciate yer kindness. But can ya tell me if anyone might know who my parents were? If they're alive... or not 'ere?" Again, the hope shines in her eyes and she nods eagerly at Many Shadow. Distracted, she looks at the young woman offering her clothing. She glances down at herself... still confused with the offer. "Ya mean I got ta change clothes while visiting you?"

Silentshadow watches the proceedings with inexpressive eyes but does hold onto her mother's hand.

SilverFox takes a deep breath as Spirit-Walker's fate has been revealed. He, too, feared the worst. Then a chuckle at Tiata's question, "No, Tiata. A gift from our tribe, welcoming you."

Tiata blinks, then blinks again, startled. "Fer me?" She glances down at the clothes and scratches her head again, itching. "Ain't never been given such fancy clothes. Don't think I'd feel like I be the same person if I wore 'em." So much for being gracious. Though Tiata isn't someone many people give things to either, so perhaps she doesn't know how to respond in kind either.

Crooked-Shank sits quietly, uninvolved with Tiata's subject. Instead, he focuses on the water-breather, looming in the rear of the room. He eyes the stranger with the suspicion of an aging man.

HeartsEase would likely smile at some of Tiata's remarks, but she's too distracted at the moment.

Many Shadows says "One other matter comes as a quick mention, and then we shall see what the Atlantean needs of us. Evening Twilight was captured trespassing on our lands after losing visitation rights for threatening tribe members. He was meeting with Soft- Feather on non-tribal lands when some of our tribe approached. He claims to feel threatened, though in fact was not. To demonstrate his ability and willingness to defend himself, he shifted until he had claws like a panther and tore a bird apart. He showed no respect for our ways -- did not need, did not hunger, and wasted precious life. There was no honor of the hunt in what he did, only... foreign ways. The bird was one of our young girls, a shifter. This he did not know when he killed her. Sadly, that is why the life of a shifter is often very short. Predator, hunter, and the like cannot tell them from natural animals unless they retain enough sense of the Sylvan they are to display non-animal behavior before it is to late. She did not. I could not end his for that reason and that alone. He is banished in a way he will not easily forget. He was caged like an animal, told his life would belong to the parents of the girl if he touched foot on our land again and was caught. He knows his life will be forfeit and the end likely painful, if the border guards let him live long enough."

ShadowWatcher nods while he writes as Many Shadows speaks of Spirit-Walker. Perhaps he will get to meet her one day, when he is ready, is the only solemn thought of her moving on to another realm, as he glances up to the Atlantean.

Many Shadows now nods to the Atlantean. "Chookma." She pauses to give others time to speak and interact.

There is a good amount of under-breath mumbling from one to the other in the room. Several mention their thoughts on how the puma should have been killed, but none raise their voice to contest the Sachem's judgment.

HeartsEase nods slowly as she listens to the bit on the enemy. However, she has heard the judgment before and come to accept it as Grandmother's wish.

Tiata finally takes the proffered clothing and retreats to a spot near the door, unobtrusive and silent as she listens to the proceedings.

Silentshadow doesn't say anything to contest Many Shadow's judgment about Evening Twilight, but does extend her claws expressively.

Well, that is Koralland's cue. He steps forward enough to be noted by the group. He wishes deeply he had time to prepare, but things did not allow for that. What was that word Moonfire used that time? "Chookma." The word is tried in hopes it is not gender-conscious. "I have come as a guest from the invitation. I am Prince Koralland, senior representative of Amaris in the region." That was good and a lot better than any other title. He remains calm.

SilverFox has an unsettled air about him at the mention of the Evening Twilight status; he too shares the sentiments of many in the room, though he also holds his tongue. Evening Twilight will soon get what is coming to him. Live by the claw, die by the claw.

Skyfire continues to watch, keeping silent. This is actually the first Council he's been to where he hasn't had to worry about a plant writhing about his ankle to trip him... and he's rather enjoying it.

SilverFox acknowledges Koralland with a respectful nod as he continues to taste his pipe's tobacco smoke.

Crooked-Shank retains his suspicious stare at the water-breather as he listens to the man speak.

Many Shadows looks toward the other Ettowealonans to speak aside to them. "I recommend that if you encounter him on non-tribal grounds, you be wary and you shun him. I told him personally that if he threatens any of you, even if not on tribal grounds, he will be treated harshly and we may well go on a panther hunt." She redirects her attention to the Atlantean. "I am known as Many Shadows, Sachem or leader of this tribe. SilverFox and Crooked-Shank are of the council of elders, an advisory council for me. HeartsEase, a healer, and her daughter Silentshadow, ShadowWatcher, our tribe's lorekeeper." One by one, she introduces the members of her tribe around the room.

Most of the crowd are content with Many Shadows' suggestion, though some of the younger warriors seem more to prefer a pro-active stance should they encounter Evening Twilight elsewhere.

Each introduction is met with a polite nod, Koralland can sense something of distrust from some present. He remains calm and not obviously affected by it. Still, he is a bit surprised -- he hadn't known his people had had enough contact with the distant race to draw such feelings. "It is an honor, Sachem, gentle folk. I thank you for the invitation." His words are smooth and natural, especially for a race to whom voice is automatically a second language.

Tiata has no idea to whom Many Shadow's is referring; thus entertains herself by rubbing the soft fabric of the new clothing in her possession between her fingers.

Sharpclaw's younger, but not a warrior, just to be certain. The wolf-graisha doesn't seem to mind the decision made in regards to Evening Twilight in spite of some harsher feelings towards the other Sylvan. Sharpclaw's kept his cool well enough, and he knows disobeying the order would be worse than anything else, especially if it put someone in danger. From his spot along the edge of the gathering, he glances from one face to the other, wondering a bit more about Koralland.

Star-Seeker lifts the flap and comes in from the Glen.

Silentshadow looks at the Atlantean, her feline-like eyes suspicious. Can you blame her? The last time she ever heard about an Atlantean was with what happened to her mother.

HeartsEase drags her eyes toward the Atlantean speaking. Well, at least if she is watching him, she will be prepared should he decide to attack, won't she? Not that she would know how to fight off a mental attack, should it come.

Skyfire doesn't seem to share the animosity towards the Atlanteans as some others do. He's known a few and they seem all right. Besides, he knows this one's new bride and anyone whom Jasmine trusts, he'll at least give them a chance.

SilverFox looks to HeartsEase with a sense of sympathy to her, before turning his attention to Koralland fully.

Many Shadows pauses for a long moment longer and then tips her head. "You are brave to come here, considering our past dealings with your race. Twice now has our tribe suffered from them. Once when a lost child with strong empathy gave us dreams nearly bad enough to drive us from our lands, until we found him and returned him to you. For weeks, he tormented us with our worst fears. Then came the black-skinned one who damaged HeartsEase, the healer who tried to help him, and who was the reason Khalid trespassed on our lands without asking us."

ShadowWatcher pauses in his writing and watches Koralland to see what brings him here.

Star-Seeker slips into the chamber, quiet for once, and sits down likewise.

Many Shadows' casual glance rests on the Atlantean, awaiting his response and to see what might have brought him here.

Kuronbo! Anger flashes briefly across Koralland face -- curse that one to the darkest, deepest abyss. Again, Koralland must apologize for his counterpart. "The one you speak of, Sachem, the dark one... he is a..." Composure rolls over the Atlantean like a gentle sea- swell. "He is a very bad example of our people, and should be cast out. I apologize that you ever made contact with that one. Please give our people a chance to make amends for him." As we must always, but that isn't voiced. "I came in peace, on behalf of my people, to offer friendship. Amaris and his Decemvirate are growing enemies by just these kinds of things. If we can offer amends or compensation, you have but to name it. Had I known of this, I would have come sooner to make such an offer."

SilverFox listens to Koralland's words and nods approvingly. Seems to be the right choice of sentiments to him.

HeartsEase shivers a little at Many Shadows' recounting of the tale. She arches an eyebrow at Koralland's speech. Kuronbo not once offered apologies, nor even acknowledged that he had done wrong. Perhaps all Atlanteans are not the same after all?

Crooked-Shank shakes his walking-stick, "For all we know, you're just saying that to gain our trust." He mutters 'shady water-breathers' to himself.

Silentshadow squeezes HeartsEase's hand reassuringly, keeping her eyes on the Atlantean.

The events recounted are ones before Sharpclaw came to live here... thus, they have little effect if any on him save for the sympathy he feels for his own. He also finds himself perhaps glad he wasn't here during those times. But as for himself, he's certainly not as wary as Crooked-Shank. About the only one he knows who's even part Atlantean is Spirit-Whisperer, and he met another one here once, though briefly. Quietly, he continues to watch and listen, not sure just what to think yet as he picks at his claws.

Skyfire flicks at the end of his braid as he listens, also not too sure all of what this is about. He's heard snippets, but... well, he hasn't been here for much of anything.

Tiata half listens and half explores the surroundings -- putting to memory the whole experience so she can tell others of her grand adventure into the Sylvan forests.

Many Shadows inclines her head. "We will not judge all by one, just as we would hope all of us are not judged by the behavior of one of our own. We perhaps can continue some of the casual trade between our tribe and some of your merchants in the Rialto. We claim no reparation for what another did. Only he can offer that, and to the one he did it to, HeartsEase and her family. He was ill at the time, but nonetheless, he damaged her... and she is owed an acknowledgment for trying to help him in our eyes."

Silentshadow stands up, suddenly feeling a bit uncomfortable in this crowd. She gives a little wave to her mother and moves towards the exit.

Silentshadow lifts the flap and steps out into the Sylvan Glen.

HeartsEase feels suddenly lost and alone as her daughter leaves with this Atlantean still here. She clenches her hands in her lap and holds her ground.

Many Shadows says "Have you more to ask of us, Prince Koralland?" The question is politely worded. "Our healers may well like some of the medicinal herbs from the deep south territory the Amaris merchants carry."

ShadowWatcher notes Koralland's offer and pauses to recall the events the Sachem mentions. His thoughts drift off to wonder what ever happened to Amaris Marina as he does so.

Star-Seeker scoots over towards HeartsEase, a cheery little smile on his face, unaware of anyone's unhappiness or discomfort.

HeartsEase reaches her arms out instinctively to offer the boy a place in her lap. Nokomis knows that she could use the comfort it would provide, whether the child needs the cuddling or not.

Sharpclaw opted to keep himself mostly separated from the rest of those here, taking the opportunity to be with the others, yet remain a little apart from things at the same time. Still silent, he positions his chin in his hands.

Koralland smiles at the reactions of the Sylvans. Good, they don't blame him for his enemy, and unlike even his own people, they will not accept Kuronbo's shrugging it off. "We would be very pleased to offer such things to you, Sachem, and any others that wished it. There are other matters for other times we might discuss as well," he says, a smile growing upon his face. He will look up Moonfire to study these people more, to be more proper when speaking to them.

A cloud of smoke billows forth as SilverFox speaks, "The floor is yours, Prince Koralland. Please, let us know what is on your mind."

"Other matters? What other matters?" comes the quick response from Many Shadows, in a tone that is just a little stronger, almost protective of her people. "What would the sea people wish of those who dwell here?"

Tiata doesn't mean to be rude, but her mind does tend to wander when a conversation becomes what is perceived to be serious. Rummaging around in one of her pockets, Tiata withdraws a small piece of driftwood. Lending only half an ear to the conversation at hand, she fiddles with the piece of driftwood with one hand, until it almost appears to be taking on a different shape than what it started out as.

Sharpclaw perks a bit at these 'other matters' Koralland touches upon, wondering what they are. His yellowed eyes settle upon him again.

Unprepared, a terrible state for an ambassador. Still, they have offered him a say, something he cannot turn down. "Avalon. How do you feel about it? They will have a rough winter, and Amaris has already pledged food for their needs. Now, we seek to see what else should be done. Their location is ideal for direct trade between our peoples and yours to the north. But I wish to know your feelings," Koralland says with an honest curiosity. His hands straighten his robes, "Sachem, I apologize, it is rude to request, but might I have a glass of water?"

Star-Seeker is happy to oblige, and settles on HeartsEase's lap, happily ignoring everyone, even the one whose lap he sits upon. He just stares at a corner, content for now.

Skyfire blinks a bit and leans over to whisper to one sitting next to him, "What is Avalon?"

HeartsEase pays some mind to the speech, but not much. She eagerly takes solace from Star-Seeker, cuddling him tightly in her lap.

SilverFox empties his ashes from his pipe into his hand as he considers. Avalon, a place he had not visited yet. Could offer an interesting adventure, experience a new atmosphere. He wishes he knew more about Avalon.

Sharpclaw knows not a thing about Avalon. Ah, ignorance. Still, he continues to simply listen.

Many Shadows indicates to one nearby to pour and offer water to the visiting Atlantean. She looks toward the others. "We have already been approached by the Empyreans to help avert a famine affecting many thousands of their people this winter if help is not given. Why is one small tribe expected to feed thousands, and support a city of rabble -- of mongrels and halfbreeds and outcasts? Why are we expected to support those who have not the skills to support themselves? We already supported them with growing two extra crops in one growing season last year, when they were in the refugee camp."

Many Shadows' glance goes to those of her tribe. This directly affects them and her very glance, the raising of her hand invites them to participate in this discussion.

Crooked-Shank nods quite emphatically, agreeing with Sachem on this. "They (outsiders) are always looking upon us as a scourge, barbarians. But when they need help, who is it but the barbarians that is asked to come to their aid?"

HeartsEase remains quiet as she thinks. The sachem has a good point. Why are we being picked on? Yet was it actually food he was requesting, or just trade? She was not paying enough attention to remember.

Sharpclaw makes a face as he listens to Many Shadows, and he speaks up out of turn, without asking. "It's already enough work just trying to feed our tribe and the Apisachi. I should know, since I worked in the fields." Ah, so the Sachem's glance does allow him to speak up. Good. "I don't think we have enough people and food to feed this 'Avalon' place. Let the rainmakers figure out what to do. They act like they're so much better than the rest of us already." So... he's at least been around enough Empyreans (probably in Haven) to decide he doesn't much care for them. "If we have to help everyone else, we won't even have enough for ourselves."

Trying to act as the voice of reason, SilverFox makes note, "Sachem, we are also a group of outcasts, are we not? Is it not Grandmother's will to help life in all its forms?"

Slipping a bound book from his satchel, ShadowWatcher thumbs through its pages, "Avalon... Avalon." he mutters before looking up first to Many Shadows. "Excuse me, Sachem, but..." He turns his attention to the Atlantean. "If I may ask, Prince Amaris, was the new lands you speak of touched badly by the war? Is the land ready for a settlement?" Shifting his attention back to Many Shadows again, he comments, "Perhaps training in how to live with the land could help them."

Skyfire also speaks up, even though he isn't of the tribe. "Double crops were grown last year, yes? If double crops are grown again, the soil could suffer... and eventually no crops could be grown." But then he sinks back into oblivion.

Koralland nods at the Sachem's words, gratefully taking the water that is offered. He continues slowly, "I apologize, Sachem. I did not mean to request food for them, nor would I wish to distract your aid from the Empyre that needs it as well. I but wished to know your feeling on the right of the colony to exist sovereignly and proposed trade through it. I was not prepared to cast things in the right light. I was just curious to hear the words of your people -- not make many proposals, and certainly not to make requests," he says, trying to explain and clear up any mistakes he made.

By now, Tiata's got a small army of woodland creatures made out driftwood lined up on top of the gift of clothing. She glances up only as the words 'food' and 'famine' reach her ears. She knows what it's like to go hungry and even to starve, yet she remains silent, selfishly grateful she only has herself to worry about at this time. Hands going still, she listens to the continuing conversation.

Many Shadows says "We, as a tribe, have not discussed such a matter. I myself have very mixed feelings. I have heard it mentioned as a 'dumping' ground for rabble and failed servants, and those one does not want to have underfoot and crowding them. Yet what will it do to their population? Will they grow in numbers more rapidly than now? Will they press against our borders? I would need to know more before I would know to judge."

Sharpclaw has a question. "Did anyone think about things like this before 'Avalon' was made?"

SilverFox offers, "Sachem, I offer myself to visit this Avalon place to form a report. I request a few others for protection of unknown elements. The offer is given to you, should you deem it worthy."

HeartsEase speaks up then. "Sachem, is this Avalon any different than our tribe here? A place for outcasts and those without any other home?"

Crooked-Shank frowns noticeably but remains silent. His voice already matches that of the Sachem on this matter, so there is no reason to speak.

Tiata listens avidly now, the word Avalon ringing in familiarity. Now if she could just remember who mentioned the word to her, since the information could be her next free meal.

"I offer a ship; one of our food-haulers can be redirected for your mission. It will be faster and safer. Also, if you wish that way, you may blend with the crew so they can be observed, unobserved if you will," Koralland says calmly when he hears the request made by SilverFox. "Perhaps this will help recover some of what the dark one has done to our image."

Many Shadows lifts her shoulders in a small shrug. "SilverFox, you may go with two warrior escorts, after you help make sure our winter supplies and our commitment to the Apisachi are met, to return before winter's storms hit us. We will need you then."

Star-Seeker is brought back to the real world by HeartsEase's speaking. Suddenly, he notices the little figurines Tiata is producing, and he grins with interest.

SilverFox nods to Many Shadows, "That is now my highest priority, Sachem."

A visit, SilverFox speaks of? Sharpclaw might just be interested in seeing just what this 'Avalon' is, and whether their place could support crops or not. "Blend with?" he asks, directed towards Koralland. It's a question seeming to ask 'how?' But thoughts of going with SilverFox end at the Sachem's decision. No big deal, really. He'd rather ensure everyone around here is to be well-fed, first. Then, maybe after that, efforts could be made to help others.

SilverFox glances to Sharpclaw a moment, then mentions to Many Shadows, "Might I ask of another, one educated in the land and growing crops, to accompany me?"

Many Shadows nods once. "Yes, that would be part of the evaluation of the area, of needs, of their ability to survive." She glances from one to the other to see if any have more to contribute.

Crooked-Shank folds his arms, "Sheep to the slaughter..." he mumbles in disagreement with SilverFox.

HeartsEase shakes her head, simply keeping her arms close around Star-Seeker.

Many Shadows says "Is there more business to discuss with the council while we are here? Any news you wish to share?"

Sharpclaw catches that look from SilverFox, along with his question, and nods slightly as if to say he's open to the idea. Then, he waits to see what else Koralland has to say on that talk of blending in on a ship.

Again there is a shifting of subject. The Sachem tends to keep visitors off guard with that, though her tribe are well familiar with the technique. A glance to SilverFox and a quick nod is enough to indicate he can negotiate that on his own, the transport.

Watching the looks being exchanged between SilverFox and Sharpclaw, ShadowWatcher notes Sharpclaw's name onto the expedition list and grins at Crooked-Shank's comment as he added it also to his notes.

Tiata looks around, wondering if the meeting is drawing to a close. Catching the young boy's smile, she smiles back, then follows his eager eyes to where they fall on her small figurines. Looking between the two, she finally scoops up one that seems to resemble a hoot owl with its wings just barely starting to unfurl as if ready to take flight. She holds it out to the small boy, nodding encouragement for him to take it.

SilverFox looks to Koralland for a moment. "The details of the trip and who will be coming can be discussed after this meeting," he offers, in attempt to speed up matters.

A questioning look crosses Koralland's face as he looks to the Sachem to see if she does accept his offer of the ship's transport. Seeing none forthcoming, he simply returns to a quiet spot to wait and learn.

Skyfire goes back to fussing with his braid. He glances once more about the chamber, then back to Many Shadows as she changes the subject.

HeartsEase leans her head against Star-Seeker's. As usual for these meetings, she soon drops off to sleep.

Star-Seeker reaches out meekly for the offered figure, curiously examining once it is in his possession. Yet another piece for his collection.

Sharpclaw considers bringing up something he's been talking to Soft-Feather about, but decides it isn't important in this venue, and can wait for another time. "I don't have anything else to say, Sachem."

Many Shadows says "Then visitors, trade, notification of the Empyrean request, the trial, all have been addressed. I have one matter to further add, and then we can be dismissed. Though it hurts me to say this, I notify you all that Morning-Mist is dismissed from her job as tribal messenger. Her actions and behavior speak for themselves, and since her... unfortunate choice of mate, has absenced herself too long to fulfill that duty. If any know of a member who is interested in such a position, they can contact me. It is inter-tribal, primarily."

Skyfire perks up at the open position. Oh, it would have been perfect! If. But if wishes were horses...

Many Shadows says "I thought perhaps of removing her from the tribe, but after weeks of thought, will leave that matter in our hands. I am not an impartial judge in this situation."

Mumbling prevails among the crowd once again, words hinting of mother/daughter relationships (or lack thereof), beating up Elders, and so on.

Sharpclaw blinkblinks at the Morning-Mist news, and he's left unable to think of anything to say to that. All he does is nod, still wondering more about the Avalon stuff.

SilverFox nods to Many Shadows, having already discussed much of the Morning-Mist situation in private.

Crooked-Shank rubs his chin thoughtfully, trying to find an acceptable replacement for a messenger in his memories and amongst the crowd.

Tiata indulges in a faint smile as she watches the small boy examine the trinket she gave him. Not often does she give away things she shapes, but this seemed like the least she could do in return for the clothing, even though the gesture was directed at someone else and not the girl who brought the clothes.

Many Shadows says "I fully realize that other tribes have trouble accepting me as a female and Sachem -- only the second known female Sachem in memory, in the long years of our known history. I know it is difficult for other tribes to take us seriously for that reason. I know it will be a bone of contention that I exert so little guidance that my own daughter mates a halfbreed. I know of her selfishness and her temper. I offer no apology for her. She is graisha. She was not raised by me in her formative years. I can only love her and hurt with and for her."

Looking up from his page as he notes Morning-Mist's fate, ShadowWatcher thinks for a time before speaking. "Sachem, to cast someone from the tribe over their choice of companionship rather than actions against the tribe is something I would disagree with. The well-being of the tribe is, of course, your burden, and the wish of the tribal Elders will naturally be respected."

Sharpclaw's had no problems with a female Sachem, and he knows a little of how... difficult Morning-Mist can be at times. He doesn't take any offense at Many Shadows' explanation of Morning-Mist being graisha, not really seeing an insult contained in it. He's noticed the behavior of different graisha can vary depending on how far 'lost' they are to the animal inside. He nods faintly to ShadowWatcher's words, though he doesn't feel comfortable enough to be making any statements of his own on this one.

Tiata starts to gather up her things, pocketing her new treasures and wadding up the beautiful clothes into a bundle that's easy to carry. Many Shadow's statement has no meaning to her, after all, she's had many owners and ship-captains that were female over the years and she's seen enough half-breeds and mongrels to not let that faze her, either.

SilverFox say "It is my feelings that Morning-Mist should remain a member, despite her aggressive nature. It is natural for her to be so, and I feel with some understanding and compassion, we can help her overcome the hostility inside. I cannot offer any words on her choice of mate, for we all felt him good enough to represent our race within Delphi. It confuses matters."

Crooked-Shank drifts off, stern look still on his face and arms still crossed in front of him.

The Atlantean stands quietly and learns about these Sylvans and their ways. Koralland is quietly absorbing and hoping to be as forgotten as possible.

Many Shadows says "Then let her be a plain 'member' for now though, she does not often reside among us, and we expect nothing of her. Thank you for your decision and for your understanding."

SilverFox smiles compassionately to Many Shadows.

Then if that's that for this council meeting, Sharpclaw shifts to stand and stretch his legs, then step outside.

Many Shadows says "One other is visitor here, I forgot to add her at that time, Ilanah. She is sponsored by Tenderheart." And at that final comment, Many Shadows offers a small tired smile to each still present. "Now, shoo, go have fun, show visitors where they can and are not supposed to go, eat, enjoy the refreshing rain."

Skyfire blinks at the mention of that name. But then he smiles. Good for her.

SilverFox glances toward Ilanah, having met with her a couple times in the past. He looks upon her favorably.

The crowd stands and begins filing out of the cramped quarters.
