Khalid Atar's marriage to Thalia Jovia Tritonides, a noblewoman of the Empyre, had lingering effects upon the loosely-unified Varati kingdoms once the war ended. Many Varati were stunned by this action, and came to believe that Khalid had betrayed his own people for the "winged kafir," and that they were no longer his chosen. But Khalid's awesome display of power at Lycenae was still too fresh in their minds, and few would dare oppose him.
Time passed, but the underlying dissension grew, as Thalia was elevated to the status of Queen-Maharani and took on more of the duties of a ruler. Some Clans turned on Khalid -- secretly at first, then with increasing boldness, for even the legacy of Lycenae could not deter them. At last, some three years after the war between the Varati and the Empyreans first started, strife once more rears its head -- but this time, it is focused internally. Civil war breaks out among the Varati, and the reign of Khalid Atar is thrown into jeopardy after half a millennium.
