Supplemental Names:

The news files include lists of possible names for each race, but limited space made it difficult to present very many. Therefore, these files are "supplemental" -- meant to offer alternative possibilities for naming your character -- or for naming relatives and ancestors in his or her background.

One thing that should be noted -- these are guidelines. That is, there is no rule that states you must choose a name from one of these lists for your character. These are here to provide you with a good idea of what is acceptable, but you're certainly welcome to do some research on your own, or simply make up a name that fits into the general theme (i.e. "fantasy-ish"). Basically, as long as your character's name is not outright silly (Superdude, Dr.Akula, Butthead, etc.) or modern-sounding (Bill, Ted, Jennifer, etc.), the admin will be satisfied.

[ Atlanteans | Empyreans | Sylvans | Varati ]

Mongrel and halfbreed names were not listed as a separate category, since such characters usually use names from one of the other races. If you choose to play a mongrel or halfbreed, just pick a name from any of the lists.

Also, the following sites might be useful in selecting a name for your character:

Atlantean Names:

With their gift of telepathy, spoken words are rare among Atlanteans. For this reason, they often appropriate names from the other races -- and those names typically have something to do with the sea, rivers, or water in general. Other times, Atlanteans will pick a name simply because they like how it sounds. In these cases, I have used mainly Hawaiian names, for their melodic syllables.

Atlanteans list their surnames, or family names, first, before their personal names. So a member of House Amaris might be called: Amaris Deire.

The ten main Atlantean families are: Amaris, Ipponis, Lir, Orcinus, Organil, Orman, Pandion, Phorcys, Salacia, and Triton. Those listed in aqua are made up of PC members on the game. Contact the faction heads of those Decemvirates if you would like to be a member, by viewing "+faction/list" while online.

Empyreal Names:

The culture of the Empyreans is similar to that of ancient Greece and Rome, and therefore most of the names are Greek or Latin in origin. A few Hebrew names have been included as well -- particularly those that have to do with angels, though such names would be fairly rare.

There are only five major Empyreal noble Houses at the moment: Acesius, Augustus, Jove, Thanatos, and Tritonis. House Ares is a Praetorian House, and Houses Chryseis and Januarius are both common families. Contact the faction heads of the various Houses if you would like to be a member, by viewing "+faction/list" while online.

Also, it should be noted that House and family names are not quite the same. That is, an individual may be from House Acesius, but his or her last name would be "Acesian." That person could be called simply "the Acesian" or "Acesian," but whenever one refers to the House, it should be called "Acesius."

Other examples: Augustus and Augustin; Jove and Jovian; Tritonis and Tritonides (Thanatos is an exception, and is pronounced the same whether a family name or House name).

Last but not least, here are some naming guidelines from ancient Rome, presented by Niklos@Aether, which can be applied to many Empyreans: Roman Naming Customs.

Sylvan Names:

Sylvans usually have two names -- their "public" one and their "private" one. Public names are typically more descriptive, and have to do with some trait or characteristic belonging to the individual (i.e. Yellow-Eyes, Longtooth, etc.)

Forest Sylvans tend to be very secretive about their private names -- only close friends or family members are ever given the privilege of using them. City-bred Sylvans are less likely to uphold this tradition, and may give up their "public" name altogether.

Several sources were used for Sylvan "private" names, including African and Native American. "Public" names are far more varied -- see the "WHO" list online for some examples.
